Waterproofing is the most important part of a bathroom and the only part you will never see again. When it fails, the damage appears somewhere else: a stained ceiling, a lifted tile, a musty smell or a rotting floor. By then the cost is no longer just a membrane. We treat waterproofing as a documented construction stage, not a quick coat before the tiler arrives.

Our waterproofing work follows AS 3740, the Australian standard for waterproofing of domestic wet areas. That includes correct substrate preparation, bond breakers at junctions, reinforcing to corners and penetrations, the specified membrane thickness, cure times and flood testing before tiling. We photograph the application and provide a compliance certificate at completion.

We waterproof full bathrooms, ensuites, laundries, balconies and commercial wet areas across Brisbane. If you are managing another builder or tiler, we can also provide a standalone waterproofing service with clear responsibility for the membrane and documentation.

What is included in our bathroom waterproofing scope

Every project is different, but the following scope is the foundation we price and manage. Your written quote confirms exactly what applies to your room, including any exclusions and provisional allowances.

01

Substrate inspection

Checking sheeting, fixing, rigidity, falls and moisture before any membrane is applied.

02

Surface preparation

Cleaning, sanding, filling, priming and installation of fillets and bond breakers at junctions.

03

Junction reinforcement

Tape and membrane reinforcement to internal corners, wall/floor junctions, waste outlets and penetrations.

04

Membrane application

Two or more coats of compatible membrane at the specified coverage, with thickness checks.

05

Shower and bath detailing

Upstands, hob details, niche waterproofing and bath-to-wall junctions sealed and reinforced.

06

Flood testing

Contained water test for the required period, with results recorded before tiling proceeds.

07

Certificate and records

Compliance certificate, product data and photographs of the completed membrane.

08

Rectification

Removal of failed membranes, investigation of the water path and rebuild of the affected wet area.

How we approach bathroom waterproofing

Water finds the weakest junction

Most failures start at a corner, a waste, a niche or the junction between a shower base and wall. We reinforce those details and make sure the membrane is continuous rather than relying on silicone to solve a geometry problem.

Falls must work before the membrane

A membrane cannot fix a floor that falls the wrong way. We check the screed and adjust it before waterproofing so water reaches the waste. If the fall is inadequate, we correct it rather than tiling over the problem.

Cure times are part of the programme

Membrane systems have specified recoat and cure windows. We schedule them properly and do not let tiling start early to save a day. Rushing the membrane is one of the most common causes of avoidable failure.

Documentation protects everyone

A certificate is not paperwork for its own sake. It records who applied the membrane, to what standard, and when. It matters for insurance, resale and any future warranty claim. We provide it as standard.

Bathroom Waterproofing cost guide

Waterproofing is priced by area, access and the complexity of details. A straightforward bathroom is typically a small proportion of the overall renovation cost.

ScopeIndicative range
Bathroom or ensuite membrane$2,500 – $4,500
Laundry or small wet area$1,800 – $3,200
Balcony or larger wet area$3,500 – $7,000
Failed membrane rectificationQuoted after investigation

Pricing assumes clear access and sound substrate. Re-sheeting, screeding and tile removal are additional if required. For a fuller breakdown, read our Brisbane bathroom renovation cost guide or use the cost calculator.

Our bathroom waterproofing process

One project lead manages the sequence, checks each trade's work and keeps you informed. The programme is agreed before demolition so you know when to expect each stage.

Inspect

We check the substrate, falls, junctions and moisture before confirming scope.

Prepare

Surfaces are cleaned, repaired, primed and reinforced at every junction and penetration.

Apply

Membrane is applied in the specified coats with thickness and coverage checked.

Test

The floor is flood tested and the result recorded before tiling.

Protect

The membrane is protected from trade damage until tiles are laid.

Certify

Compliance certificate and records are issued at completion.

Why homeowners choose our team

We are the builder. The team who quotes your project is accountable for the waterproofing, tiling, trade coordination and handover. That direct responsibility is why our scope can be specific and our programme realistic.

  • QBCC licensed for kitchen, bathroom and laundry work, with Certificate III qualifications in tiling and waterproofing.
  • AS 3740 waterproofing with flood testing and a compliance certificate.
  • Externally ducted ventilation and moisture-aware detailing for Brisbane's climate.
  • Written variations, agreed before the work proceeds.
  • A formal handover with testing, care instructions and documentation.

If you are comparing quotes, read our guide to choosing a bathroom contractor and our contractor standards so you know what to ask.

Bathroom Waterproofing across Brisbane

We work across Greater Brisbane, including the northside, southside, eastside, westside and inner city. Local housing conditions affect the scope: older Queenslanders may need floor levelling and substrate repair, while apartments need body corporate approval and careful access planning.

Practical answers

Bathroom Waterproofing questions

The questions Brisbane homeowners ask most often about bathroom waterproofing, costs and timing.

Why do I need a waterproofing certificate?

A certificate documents that the wet area was waterproofed to AS 3740 by a competent applicator, with the products and dates recorded. It supports insurance, resale and warranty claims, and gives you evidence if a future issue arises.

How long does waterproofing take?

Application is usually completed in a day or two, but cure times before tiling can add another day or more depending on the product and conditions. We include those times in the programme rather than compressing them.

Can you waterproof over existing tiles?

Generally no. A reliable membrane needs a sound, prepared substrate. Tiling over an existing floor usually hides the condition of the original waterproofing and creates height and adhesion problems. We recommend removal and rebuild in most cases.

What is a flood test?

The shower or wet-area floor is dammed and filled with water for a specified period to check that the membrane holds and the fall directs water to the waste. We record the test before tiling.

Do you waterproof balconies and laundries?

Yes. We waterproof domestic wet areas including bathrooms, ensuites, laundries, balconies and roof terraces, subject to the relevant standard and substrate requirements.

My shower is leaking into the ceiling below. What now?

Stop using the shower and arrange an inspection. The source may be the membrane, a failed waste seal, grout or plumbing. We investigate before quoting so the repair addresses the cause rather than just the visible damage.
