Best forRenovations and rectification

Tiling is where a renovation either looks resolved or looks like a collection of materials. A good tiling job starts with set-out: where the grid begins, how cuts land at corners, how niches align with the basin and shower, and how the floor tile meets the wall. We plan those relationships before the first tile is laid.

Our tiling work covers bathrooms, ensuites, laundries, kitchens and commercial wet areas. We handle large-format porcelain, ceramic, mosaic, kit-kat and natural stone, including mitred edges, recessed niches, linear drains and heated floors. We also correct poor substrates, which is often the real reason an existing tiling job has failed.

Because we also build the wet areas, the tiling is not disconnected from the waterproofing. We protect the membrane, use compatible adhesives, allow movement joints where required and finish wet junctions with suitable sealant rather than grout. The result is a room that performs as well as it looks.

How we approach bathroom tiling

Set-out is the design

Before tiling, we mark the room and agree where full tiles sit and where cuts fall. A centred layout, balanced cuts and aligned niches make an ordinary tile look expensive. A poor set-out makes an expensive tile look ordinary.

Large format needs a flat substrate

Large tiles amplify any deviation in the wall or floor. We check straightness and flatness, then level or render where needed. Skipping that step leads to lippage, hollow spots and failed adhesion.

Mitre rather than trim where it suits

Mitred external corners give a clean, continuous look, particularly with large-format tiles. They take more skill and time than plastic trim, so we agree the detail and price it properly rather than substituting at installation.

Protect the waterproofing

Tilers and waterproofers need to work as one sequence. We protect the membrane, use compatible adhesives and avoid penetrating the waterproof layer with fixings. Wet-area junctions are sealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

Bathroom Tiling cost guide

Practical answers

Bathroom Tiling questions

The questions Brisbane homeowners ask most often about bathroom tiling, costs and timing.

What is the best tile for a Brisbane bathroom?

Porcelain is the most practical choice for floors and walls because it is dense, water-resistant and available in large formats. Use a slip-rated floor tile, and consider texture or a subtle pattern to hide water marks. Natural stone can work but needs sealing and more maintenance.

Can you tile over existing tiles?

It is possible in some situations, but we usually advise against it in wet areas. Tiling over existing tiles increases floor height, hides the condition of the waterproofing and can compromise adhesion. Removal and rebuild is more reliable.

How do you stop tiles from lipping?

Substrate preparation, the right adhesive, a levelling system and correct trowel size. Large-format tiles need a flat wall and full coverage. We check the substrate before tiling rather than trying to correct it with adhesive.

Do you install shower niches?

Yes. We frame and waterproof the niche, then tile it with mitred or trimmed edges. Niche position is set out with the tile grid so it aligns with the surrounding joints.

Should I use epoxy or cement grout?

Epoxy grout is more stain-resistant and easier to clean, but it costs more and requires careful installation. Cement grout is traditional and adequate in many areas. We recommend based on the tile, budget and maintenance preference.

How long does bathroom tiling take?

A standard bathroom typically takes 3–5 days for walls and floors, depending on tile size, drying times and detail. Large-format, stone or mosaic work can take longer.
